UniSA’s museum of discovery, MOD., aims to inspire and engage young adults with science and technology, recognising that many of the jobs of the future will be largely reliant on those with skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The free public museum located on North Terrace in UniSA’s Cancer Research Institute building saw more than 100,000 visitors in its first year. It is open every day except Mondays, and hosts school groups from across South Australia as well as welcoming visitors of all ages to its dynamic, changing exhibition programs.
MOD. presents an annual program which includes two major seasonal exhibitions, complimented by workshops which encourage creativity and participation in projects such as building peace machines or engaging young adults in designing exhibitions.
Seven spaces in MOD. over two floors host different interactive exhibits which showcase how research shapes our understanding of the world and informs future possibilities.

The award winning Sleep Ops exhibit explored how sleep might be a tool for peace, examining how sleep deprivation in military operations and other around-the-clock, safety critical settings can have disastrous outcomes.
In the Universal Gallery, MOD. houses Australia’s first ‘Science on a Sphere’ which enables visitors to visualise research on climate change, astronomy and geology, and interact with touchscreens around the gallery.
The hanging sculpture, named the Hedonometer, measured Australia’s happiness based on the day’s tweets on Twitter and assigned a temperature and colour to the words written. With hundreds of millions of people using Twitter globally each day it’s an important social signal of mass wellbeing.
Using the F.A.B.L.E. app downloaded to a smart phone, visitors could interact with an alien and navigate a new relationship. The immersive exhibit explored principles of consent and sought to achieve a two-way flow of information with the alien being.
